Movies I Watched on a Plane (Part II)

This movie starts promising, and is full of suspense up to the (surprising) end. However, the quite unbelievable ending spoils this movie a bit.

Southpaw

Southpaw is a 2015 sports drama film directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by Kurt Sutter, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel McAdams.
Boxer Billy Hope turns to trainer Tick Wills to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife in a tragic accident and his daughter to child protection services. (IMDB)

I don’t care for sports dramas, but I watch every movie Jake Gyllenhaal is in. After the sudden death of Billy’s wife the story becomes extremely predictable, but Jake Gyllenhaal kept me (and will keep you) watching.

This movie was highly acclaimed by critics and it was surely funny and all, but it will not sink into my long term memory.

(It’s) Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong is a romantic comedy directed by Emily Ting, starring Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg.
An attraction forms when a Chinese American girl visiting Hong Kong for the first time meets an American expat who shows her the way, but timing may not quite be on their side. A walk and talk romance set in the beautiful city of Hong Kong, the film asks the question – what happens when you meet the right person at the wrong time? (IMDB)

To me, this movie was the most pleasant surprise. It’s refreshingly clever and charming, without being kitschy or sentimental. Returning from Hong Kong certainly helped me choose this movie, but you can watch it just NOW in selected cinemas and on VOD.

Movies I Watched on a Plane (Part I)

When I flew from Frankfurt to Hong Kong (via Dubai) I had the time and opportunity to watch a few movies that were or were not on my bucket list.

Here are my thoughts:

The film focuses on escalating racial tensions at a prestigious Ivy League college from the perspective of several African American students. This one was interesting and entertaining without being educational. Thumbs up.

Not sure if I had watched this one at home. Damn, I would have missed a funny flick. Highly recommended. And while you’re at it, watch the original TV show too!

Kingsman

Kingsman: The Secret Service is a 2014 British spy film directed by Matthew Vaughn, and based on the comic book The Secret Service, created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. It follows the recruitment and training of a potential secret agent, Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton), into a secret spy organisation. Eggsy joins a mission to tackle a global threat from Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), a wealthy megalomaniac. The film also stars Colin Firth, Mark Strong, and Michael Caine.

Oh boy, I didn’t expect this movie to be this batshit crazy. When all those heads exploded like fireworks and 70s flowers, I was reminded of Mars Attacks! IDK.

Perfect Proposal 은밀한 유혹 (lit. Secret Temptation)

Perfect Propsal is a 2015 South Korean romantic thriller film written and directed by Yoon Jae-gu, based on the novel La Femme de paille (“Woman of Straw”) by Catherine Arley.
An indebted young woman gets a proposal from a handsome man: Apply for work on a luxury yacht with his boss, the difficult, old and infirm chairman of a large company, where they can then manipulate him to get their hands on his wealth. (IMDB)

According to Wikipedia, this is a romantic thriller. I think it’s a dark comedy. I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be both. Yoo Yeon-seok makes a sexy villain. Easy on the eye.
